A member of the Canadian boxing team at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics, Herscovitch won the bronze medal as a middleweight. A natural welterweight, he volunteered to step up to the middleweight class for the Olympics so a teammate could have a better chance of winning in the lighter division.
Herscovitch, an excellent all-around athlete, was a member of Montreal Amateur Athletic Association's championship soccer team in 1920. He is a member of the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame, and was inducted "for athletic achievement and as an example of sportsmanship."
