A member of the United States track and field team at the 1912 Stockholm Olympics, Schwartz competed in the 10,000-meter walk. He finished sixth in his preliminary heat with a time of 53:30.8 and did not advance to the finals.
Schwartz was the president of the Walkers Club of America and the chairman of the National AAU (Amateur Athletic Union) Committee on Walking.
