After taking up the sport in 1987 at the age of 13, Marcelo helped lead Brazil to the World Junior Championship in 1993. In the mid-1990s, he joined the Brazilian National team and became the country's best setter. He was also a member of Sao Paulo from 1993-1998. Elgarten helped lead them to the Brazilian Superliga Championship in 1997 and was voted the league's best setter.

A knee injury interrupted Marcelo's 1998 season, but he recovered the following year (after signing with Olympikus) to again win the honor of the Superliga's top setter. Following the 1999 season, Marcelo joined Palermo in the Italian League, the top league in the world, thus firmly establishing himself as one of the best players in the world.
