A Greco-Roman wrestler, Bernstein competed for Israel at the 1988 Seoul Olympics in the light-heavyweight division (90-kg/ 198 pounds). He defeated Kamal Ibrahim of Egypt in the first round of the competition, but lost to Jeanfrances Court of France in his second bout. Bernstein then received a bye (no opponent) in the third round before losing to Franz Pitschmann of Austria in the fourth round, eliminating him from the competition.
