After his college career at Alabama, Sington turned down offers to play professional football and to wrestle professionally. He chose instead to play baseball. Fred broke into the majors in 1934 with the Washington Senators, appearing in 9 games and hitting .286. Originally a pitcher, Sington was converted into an outfielder noted for his tremendous speed and strong arm. Although he never played a full season in the majors, he appeared in 72 games for the Senators in 1937, slugging 15 doubles and 4 triples. When he was traded to the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1938, Fred batted .358 in 17 games. Sington played one more season with the Dodgers, hitting .274 in 1939, before retiring. He then returned to Alabama, becoming known for his civic service and contributions to sports in the state. He was even nicknamed 'Mr. Birmingham' in later years.
