Alan L. Stein

A two-time All-Ivy League selection, Stein was a member of Columbia University's 1951 team, considered to be the finest squad in school history. He captained the basketball team the following year. The only Republican in California Governor Jerry Brown's administration, Stein served as the state's secretary for business, transportation, and housing. He has been very active in San Francisco cultural life and is chairman of the board of the American Conservatory Theater and a trustee of the San Francisco Museum of Mordern Art.

Career Highlights:
Stein had a marvelous career at Columbia and was a key player on one of the school's greatest teams. The Lions enjoyed a strong season in 1950, with a record of 22-7 (9-3 in conference), and the following year, they were one of the top teams in the country.

In 1951, Stein was named second team All-Ivy League. Columbia went undefeated in the regular season (22-0) and was ranked No. 3 in the nation by the AP (No. 5 UPI). The Lions also had a record of 12-0 in the conference, winning the Ivy League title and receiving an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament. In the first round, Columbia faced a very tough Illinois team (ranked No.4). Stein scored 9 points and added 4 rebounds and 4 assists, but the Lions blew a seven point halftime lead and lost the match, 79-71.

In 1952, Stein captained the Lions team and was one of the top players in the conference. He finished fourth in the league in scoring with 14.8 points per game and was named first team All-Ivy League. Columbia could not repeat the previous year's success, however, and finished with a record of 16-10 (7-5 in conference).
