Gombos was a member of the Hungarian fencing team, competed in both the team and individual sabre events in the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics. In the team competition, Hungary went undefeated and won the gold medal. After defeating the United States (14-2), and Great Britain (13-3) in the elimination round, they beat Germany (12-4) and France (12-4) in the semifinals. In the finals, they defeated Poland (14-2) and Italy (9-7) to win the gold medal. Among Sandor's teammates were fellow International Jewish Sports Hall of Famers Attila Petschauer and Janos Garay. In the individual competition, Gombos reached the finals but did not medal after winning eight of his 11 bouts; he officially finished in fifth place.

Career Highlights:
Gombos was the world champion in individual sabre in 1926 and 1927, and the European champion in individual sabre in 1926, 1927, 1930, and 1931. He was also the Hungarian sabre champion in 1930. Gombos was a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
