A two-time Olympian for the Soviet Union canoe team, Vinogradov won two medals at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. In the C2 500-meter, he and partner Sergei Petrenko won their preliminary heat (1:58.22), and then captured the gold medal by winning the final. Vinogradrov was also partnered with Petrenko in the C2 1,000-meter event, and they again won their preliminary heat (3:47.62) before winning their second gold medal.

Vinogradov returned to the Olympics four years later at the 1980 Moscow Games, and competed exclusively in the C2 500-meter event. Partnered again with Petrenko, the Soviets finished third in their preliminary heat (1:44.54) and advanced to the final. Vinogradov and Petrenko did not successfully defend their Olympic title, however, as they finished sixth in the final with a time of 1:46.95 (they finished over three seconds behind the gold medal-winning Hungarian team).

Career Highlights:
An outstanding competitor in canoeing for the Soviet Union in the 1970s, Vinogradov won the 1971 World Championship in the C2 10,000-meter event with partner Naum Prokupets. Aleksandr also won the world championship in the C2 500-meter event in 1974 and 1975.
