Sarkany, a back, was a member of Hungary's water polo teams at two Olympiads in the 1930s. At the 1932 Los Angeles Games, the Hungarians dominated the competition, defeating Germany (6-2) and Japan (17-0) to qualify for the gold medal game. In the final, the Hungarians easily defeated the U.S. team, 7-0. In 1932, Sarkany had two Jewish teammates, both of whom were goalkeepers, Gyorgy Brody, and Istvan Barta.

Sarkany returned to the Olympics four years later at the 1936 Berlin Games and again helped the Hungarian team capture the gold medal (Brody was once again in goal). They went undefeated in the competition and had impressive victories over Yugoslavia (4-1), Belgium (3-0), the Netherlands (8-0), and France (5-0) enroute to winning the gold.

Career Highlights:
Sarkany, a National Team member in the 1930s, was a member of Hungary's European water polo champion teams in 1931, 1934, 1938. He is a member of the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.
