At the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Smadja competed for the Israeli judo team and won the bronze medal in the 70-kg weight class. He was only the second Israeli to ever win a medal; judoka Yael Arad captured the nation's first medal the day before in the women's competition.

Smadja then returned to the Olympics in 1996 (Atlanta). Despite suffering a serious knee injury 10 days before the opening of the Games, Smadja still competed, although he did not medal.

Career Highlights:
Smadja won the silver medal at the 1995 World Championships, and placed third at the 1994 European Championships.
