Shmuel was a member of the Israeli boxing team at the 1988 Seoul Olympics and competed in the featherweight division (126 pounds). He defeated John Mirona of Sudan and Richard Pittman (5-0 decision) of the Cook Islands in early bouts and eventually reached the quarterfinals. Shmuel fought Giovanni Parisi of Italy in the quarterfinals, lost a 5-0 decision, and was eliminated from the competition. Shmuel officially finished in fifth place, which was one of Israel's top performances in the Olympic Games up to that point.
