Porkhomovskiy was a member of Israel's track and field team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, competing in the 4x100-meter relay. The Israeli team finished sixth in its preliminary heat (39.76), and did not advance to the semifinals; they placed 26th overall.

Career Highlights:
Porkhomovskiy, the current Israeli record holder in the 100-meter sprint with a time of 10.20, has been an outstanding sprinter for a decade. A three-time Russian national 100-meter champion, he emigrated to Israel in the 1990s and became eligible to compete for Israel in August 1999.

A jeweler by occupation (many Israeli athletes hold jobs), Porkhomovskiy had finished third in the 100-meters (10.31) at the 1994 European Championships, fourth in the 1994 European Indoor Championships in the 60-meter, second in the 100-meter (10.35) at the 1997 World Universities, and sixth at the 1998 European Championships (10.29).

Competing for the Israeli national team, Porkhomovskiy was a member of the 4x100 meter relay team that finished ninth at the 1999 World Athletic Championships, and won the 100-meter (10.23) at the 1999 Israel Athletics Championships. He is 26th all-time in European history in the 200-meter with a time of 20.35 (set as a Russian in 1994) and 31st in the 100-meter (10.12; also in 1994).

In 2001, Porkhomovskiy competed in his first World Championships, racing in the 100-meter. He finished third in his preliminary heat with a time of 10.42 and advanced as far as the quarterfinals. At the 2002 European Championships, Alex competed in the 100-meter, finishing with a time of 10.61 in the preliminaries; he did not advance to the quarterfinals. He also ran in the 4x100-meter relay, but the Israeli team did not finish their preliminary race.
