Gratsch was a member of the Soviet Union speed skating team at two Olympiads and competed in the 500-meter race. At the 1956 Winter Games in Cortina d'Ampezzo, Italy, he won the silver medal with a time of 40.8, and was described as "slightly built" by the New York Times. Gratsch returned to the Olympics four years later at the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley, California. He won the bronze medal in the 500-meter (40.4).
