One of America's top hammer throwers in the 1950s, Engel competed in the event at the 1952 Helsinki Games. In the preliminary round, Engel finished with the eleventh best throw (164'1") and advanced to the final, where he fouled on all three of his attempts.

Career Highlights:
In the 1950s, Engel was one of the top hammer throwers in the world. In 1953, while attending New York University, Engel (class of 1954) was ranked No. 7 in the world with a throw of 195'4-1/2", breaking the American record which had been on the books for 40 years! He still holds NYU's hammer throw record (set in 1954) with a distance of 183'5". Engel competed at the 1953 Maccabiah Games and captured the gold medal in the hammer throw with a mark of 163'6", setting a Maccabiah record by over 31 feet. He also won the silver medal in the discus throw.
