Bloch was a midfielder for the French soccer team at the 1900 Paris Games, the first time the sport was attached to the Olympic program. However, medals were not awarded because soccer was a demonstration sport that year, and countries allowed club teams to select their players instead of them being chosen by National Olympic committees. The competition was actually held simultaneously with the World Exhibition of Paris. Bloch played for Club Francais Paris, which finished in second place after losing to England's Upton Park Football Club 4-0 and beating Belgium's Belgian Student XI club, 6-2. As an important distinction in Olympic rules, medals are not awarded in demonstration sports, but are awarded in an exhibition sport. At the 1900 Games, soccer was a demonstration sport; and therefore no medals were awarded, but water polo was an exhibition sport and medals were awarded to the top three teams.
