Hess was a member of the U.S. lacrosse team at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics, the first time the sport was included in the Olympic program. During the Games, the U.S., which was represented by the St. Louis AAA Club team, won the silver medal after losing to Canada (the Shamrock Club team from Winnipeg) in the final. One of Hess's teammates was Albert Lehman.
