Bogulyubov competed in the lightweight division for the Soviet Union's judo team at the 1964 Tokyo Games, the first time judo was included in the Olympics. In the first round of the competition, Aron won his pool by easily defeating Nguyen Van Binh of South Vietnam and Eiam Harssarungsri of Thailand. In the quarterfinals, Bogulyubov defeated Chung Sam Park of Korea on a uranage (he picked up his opponent around the waist and threw him over his shoulder as he fell on his own back); this move gave Aron a half�point and the victory. He then faced Eric Haenni of Switzerland in the semifinals. To many people's surprise, Haenni was awarded the victory after a fairly uneventful match, and Bogulyubov had to settle for the bronze medal.
