Damti was a striker on the Israeli soccer team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics team; they reached the quarterfinals and finished fifth overall. Gideon played every minute of the three preliminary games as Israel drew with Guatemala (0-0), Mexico (2-2), and France (1-1). The Israeli team finished second in the group to France with 3 points and advanced to the quarterfinals. In the quarterfinal match, Damti again started up front but Brazil defeated Israel, 4-1.

Career Highlights:
Damti is one of the greatest scorers in Israeli soccer history (he is still No. 9 in Israel National League history with 142 goals). He was a member of Israel's 1974 Asian Cup team that reached the final; they lost to Iran 1-0. After his playing career, Gideon turned to coaching. During the 2000-2001 season, Damti was the assistant coach of Maccabi Netanya.
