Beal competed as an athlete in three Olympiads on the U.S. volleyball team before turning to coaching. In 1984, Doug was the head coach of America's first-ever gold medal-winning volleyball team.

Career Highlights:
Beal was a five-time All-America volleyball player at Ohio State in the late 1960s and was named Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association MVP in 1969. He then coached the Buckeyes from 1972-1974 while a member of the U.S. National Team (1970-76) and competed in three Olympics, 2 World Championships, and was the MVP of the USVBA (United States Volleyball Association) National Championships. Beal appeared in more international competitions than any previous American volleyball player. In 1976, Doug was named U.S. Men's National Team and established the country's first full-time, year-round training center. Beal was elected to the Volleyball Hall of Fame in 1989. He is also a member of the Ohio State University Hall of Fame, the Cleveland Hall of Fame, and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. In 2000, Beal was a finalist for the FIVB (International Volleyball Federation) Coach of the Century.
