Olympic Info:
Manshirov suffered a disappointing 2004 Athens Games, as he was eliminated in the elimination pool. In his first match, Yakov was brushed aside by Danil Khamilov of Kazakhstan 8-0. The Israeli was uninspired from the start and seemed unable to initiate any offensive moves. He met Spaniard Alberto Jose Recuero in his second pool match, and the former Georgian was outclassed 4-0. Thankfully Manshirov is still young and will have gained valuable experience from the Athens Olympics.

Manshirov represented Israel in the under-74 kilograms Greco-Roman wrestling event in the Athens Games. Along with his cousin Gocha Chichiashvili Yakov was part of a strong contingent of wrestlers from the Soviet Union. Yakov comes from one of the most prestigious wrestling families in the former Soviet Union, He explains "my uncle and grandfather wrestled and made this my passion. It's a family thing." The wrestler represents the Hapoel Rehovot wrestling club.

Career Highlights:
Yakov won 8th place in the World Youth Championship but had never placed well in a major senior competition until recently. Luckily, the young wrestler has matured into a world class under-74 kilogram wrestler just in time for the 2004 Olympics. In the 2003 World Championship Manshirov made it to the quarter finals, where he lost to Constantine Schneider. His final rank of 8th overall qualified him for on Olympian berth.
