A member of the Israeli weightlifting team at the 1976 Montreal Olympics, Weitz had one of Israel's highest finishes prior to the 1990s. In the featherweight division, he placed fifth with a combined lift of 577.5 pounds (252.5-kg ).

Career Highlights:
Israel's Sportsman of the year in 1976, Weitz won the gold medal in the featherweight division at the Asian Games that year with a combined lift of 260-kg. He was ranked in the top five in the Soviet Union before emigrating to Israel. In 1998, Weitz was honored as one of the top 50 athletes in Israel's history.
