Career Highlights:
Rothschild, who has a Jewish father, spent ten years in the minor leagues, playing in the Cincinnati Reds and Detroit Tigers organizations. He was called up by the Tigers in September in 1981, and appeared in only 7 games over his two-year career In his rookie year, Larry pitched 5 times, all in relief, compiling a sterling 1.50 ERA. The first batter he faced in the majors grounded a sure double play ball back to the mound with the bases loaded, but Larry muffed the ball when his new hat fell in his eyes, and he was only able to retire the batter at first.

When Rothschild ended his playing career, he became a minor league coach for the Reds in 1985. Five years later, he was promoted to the majors as the Reds bullpen coach, then became the pitching coach in 1992 under skipper Lou Pinella. He remained with the club until 1993, when the entire coaching staff was fired. Rothschild then spent a year in the Braves minor league systen before being hired by the Florida Marlins as their pitching coach. He was entrusted with the club's young staff, and die such an outstanding job that he helped lead them to an unexpected World Series victory in 1997. After that season, Larry was hired by the expansion Tampa Bay Devil Rays as their first manager, despite having no previous managing experience. He lasted a little over three seasons and had a record of 205-294 before being fired 14 games into the 2001 season.
