Charles, Frank

Franklin Charles

A ten-year minor league veteran, Frank (who has a Jewish mother) finally made his debut in the majors when he played for Houston towards the end of the 2000 season. Though his Astro stint was wildly successful (he hit .429!), the big right-handed catcher was reassigned to the AAA New Orleans Zephyrs after the season. He was released from the Astros prior to the 2003 season and played both that season and in 2004 in the independent Northeast League with the North Shore Spirit.

Over the next nine seasons, he played in the minor league systems of the Giants (twice), the Texas Rangers, the San Diego Padres, and the Astros. He also played for the St. Paul Saints of the independent Northern League in 1993. In his cup-of-coffee stint with the 2000 Astros after his September 4 callup, Frank hit a rousing .429 (3-7) with 2 RBI and a slugging average of .571.

Charles began the 2001 campaign with New Orleans in the Pacific Coast League and appeared in three games, hitting .333 (1-3) before being sent to the Rochester Red Wings, the AAA affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. Frank appeared in 66 games for Rochester and hit .245 (57-233) with one HR and 22 RBI.
