Lloyd Cecil Allen

Allen, who converted to Judaism, pitched in the majors for seven seasons with the Angels, Rangers, and White Sox. A relief pitcher, Allen had his best season in 1971, when he had 15 saves and an ERA of 2.49.

Career Highlights:
An outstanding all-around athlete who played varsity baseball, football, and basketball in high school, Allen was a member of the varsity baseball team as a freshman. After his high school career, he was selected by the California Angels as the 12th overall pick in the 1968 MLB Draft. Allen spent his first professional season in the California League with San Jose, and then made his major league debut in 1969.

The Angels hoped that Lloyd would be a key member of the bullpen and in his first full season with the club (1971), he was outstanding. That year, Allen appeared in 54 games and finished with a record of 4-6, but was seventh in the AL with 15 saves and had a terrific 2.49 ERA. While with the Angels, Allen struck up a friendship with famed Angels coach Jimmie Reese. Reese called the young hurler "Sandy" because he was the 'right-handed Sandy Koufax.'

Allen pitched for the Angels until the 1973 season, when he was traded to the Texas Rangers. Texas, in turn, sent him to the Chicago White Sox during the 1974 season. He appeared in nine games for the Chisox during 1974 and 1975, then retired following the 1975 season.
