Rodney Cline Carew

A Hall of Famer who is one of the great contact hitters in modern history, Carew won seven batting titles (four in a row) and had a .328 lifetime average over a glorious 19-year career. A Panamanian who married a Jewish woman, Rod never converted, though he studied Judaism and wore a Mogen David. We mention him here on this web site because the question of his Jewishness often arises among Jewish fans. He has stated that he is not Jewish and does not plan to convert.

Career Highlights:
Carew compiled over 3,000 hits in his career (3,015)and led the American League in batting seven times, four of them consecutive (1972-75). He led the league in hits three times, and in runs once. He played in four World Series, two with Minnesota, two with California. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1991.

Position:
Second base (1130 games) and first base (1184 games), but also some shortstop, third base and DH. He played the outfield only once in his entire 19-year career, in a game in 1978.
