Reulbach, Ed (Big Ed)

Edward Marvin Reulbach

A great pitcher for the Cubs, Dodgers and Braves, Big Ed won 24 games in 1908, 20 in 1915, and had a lifetime mark of 181-106. He had a dazzling career e.r.a. of 2.28, and also won two World Series games. One of the most educated of his generations's major leaguers, Ed attended four colleges. Reulbach is listed as Jewish in the encyclopedia of JEWS in sports; but his descendent, "Big Mike" Ruelbach, has informed this web site that Big Ed was Lutheran, not Jewish.

Birth and Death Dates:
December 1, 1882 -- July 17, 1961

Pitching for the Cubs on September 26, 1908, Ruelbach shut out the Dodgers in both games of a double-header! Big Ed led the National League in winning percentage for three consecutive years (1906-08), with percentages of .826, .810 and .774. His won-lost records for those seasons were dominating: 19-4, 17-4, and 24-7. In 1909, with a 19-10 mark, his winning percentage "slipped" to a mere .655.
