Roseman, James (Chief)

James John Roseman

An outfielder -- and pitcher -- in the early days of baseball, this long-ball hitter was a teammate of Lipman Pike; in 1881, they both played outfield for the Brooklyn Atlantics. The encyclopedia of JEWS in sports lists the Chief as Jewish, though the Jewish Sports Review (September/October 2000) insists he is not. One of the authors of the encyclopedia, Jesse Silver, has recently declared that current research seems to confirm Roseman was not Jewish.
