Weintraub, Phil "Mickey"

Philip Weintraub

Weintraub, a tremendous hitter in the minors (he had the first .400 season in Southern Association history), had a .295 lifetime batting average playing for the Giants, Reds and Phillies in the 1930's and '40's. Called "baseball's best-dressed pinch hitter" by journalist Fred Lieb, Phil later became a manager.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. October 12, 1907 - d. June 21, 1987

Career Highlights:
Weintraub debuted in the majors in 1933 with the New York Giants, and was a reserve outfielder and platooned first baseman with the club for four seasons. After spending the 1937 season with the Giants and Cincinnati Reds, Phil had an excellent year in 1938 while with the Philadelphia Phillies. In his first full season, he was tenth in the league in batting (.311), third in on-base percentage (.422), and tenth in walks (64) while hitting 4 HR and 45 RBI. Weintraub also had the last hit in Philadelphia's famed Baker Bowl.

In 1944, Weintraub returned to the majors with the Giants as a war-time player after a six year absence. That season, he took advantage of the league's poor pitching to put up the best power numbers of his major league career. In a career-high 104 games, Phil hit .316 (8th in the league) with 13 HR (9th in the league) and 77 RBI. He was also among the league leaders in on-base percentage (.412 - 5th), and triples (9 - 6th). On April 30, Weintraub drove in an astonishing 11 runs with a homer, triple, and 2 doubles against the Dodgers (the Giants won 26-8). Phil's final season in the majors was in 1945, when he hit .272 with 10 HR and 42 RBI.
