Cohen, Hy

Hyman Cohen

A big right-hander who pitched in seven games for the Chicago Cubs in 1955, Cohen compiled an ERA of 7.94. He neither won nor lost any of the games in which he appeared.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. January 29, 1931

Career Highlights:
Born in Brooklyn to immigrant parents -- his father was from Poland and his mother from Russia -- Hy was drafted by the New York Yankees at the age of 17 in 1948. After two years in the minors, his contract was not picked up, but this was apparently an oversight by Yankee management, not a judgement on his skills. Nevertheless, Cohen signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1951 and had a good year in the minors that season -- during the year, he played with Sparky Anderson and Maury Wills.

In 1952, Cohen was drafted by the U.S. Army during the Korean War, and was sent to a base in San Antonio, Texas. Assigned to play baseball, Hy spent two years in the army before he returned to the Cubs' minor league system in 1954. The following year, he finally made his major league debut and played in seven games. He played a number of more years in the minors before arm troubles caused him to retire.

Cohen returned to school and received his Master's Degree in 1966. He worked in the Los Angeles public school system as a Social Studies and physical education teacher and a football, tennis, and baseball coach -- his baseball teams won two city championships. In 1995, he was honored at Dodger Stadium (in Los Angeles) for his involvement in baseball education.
