Bennett, Joe

Joseph Rosenblum Bennett

It was not learned that Bennett, who appeared in one game for the Philadelphia Phillies in 1923, was Jewish until 1964. After his one big league appearance, he went onto a career in the Army and attained the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. July 2, 1900 - d. July 11, 1987

Career Highlights:
After attending both NYU and the University of Missouri (he did not graduate from either), Bennett began playing professional baseball in the early 1920s. In 1923, he played briefly with the Lancaster Club in the New York-Pennsylvania League before being called up by the Philadelphia Phillies. Bennett appeared in one game -- on June 5, 1923 -- but never got to bat. He fielded impeccably the one ground ball hit to him at third base -- so he has a major league assist.

After his baseball career ended in 1924, Bennett lived in New Jersey and ran a sporting goods store and a hardware store. In 1926, he joined the U.S. Army and served in the quartermaster's corps until 1955. After his retirement, he managed Gibbs Hall, the officers club in Monmouth, New Jersey.
