A great basketball player at the University of Illinois, Bernstein was a fabulous all-around athlete who was also a star football player in the late 1900s and early 1910s.

Career Highlights:
A guard at the University of Illinois, Bernstein played three seasons for the basketball team. As a sophomore in 1909, he helped lead the Illini to a record of 8-6. In 1910, he was named second team All-Western Conference (predecessor of the Big Ten) as Illinois had a record of 5-4.

The following year (1911), he captained the Illini to a 6-6 record and repeated as second team All-Western Conference. In discussing the season, The Spalding Guide noted: "In Bernstein, Illinois had one of the best guards of the year..his cleverness...consistently help opponents to low scores."
