Saltzman, Sol : Jews In Sports @ Virtual Museum

Saltzman, Sol

Saltzman captained the Penn State University basketball team in 1931. He also played soccer, baseball, and football while in college.

Birth and Death Dates:
unknown

Career Highlights:
Saltzman was a two-year starter for Penn State in the early 1930s and was the team's only bright spot during his basketball career. But the squad's 5-9 record in 1930 did not bode well for the 1931 season, in which Saltzman was the team captain. Nonetheless, prior to the season Sol was praised in the New York Evening Post as, "...the man around whom [coach Dutch] Hermann will build his team. He is an exceptional guard and has managed to hold his opponents to low scores in two years of varsity play..." Unfortunately, Saltzman was not an offensive threat and received little support from the rest of his team. The Nittany Lions finished the 1931 season with a record of 3-12.
