Guttman, Murray

A terrific all-around athlete, Guttman was an all-conference (Mid-Atlantic Conference) basketball player at the University of Toledo in the 1950s. On February 22, 2002, he was inducted into the University of Toledo's Varsity 'T' Hall of Fame. Guttman also played baseball for the Rockets and was named "all-conference" three times. After graduating, Guttman played minor league baseball as a member of the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds. In the early 1970s, Murray became athletic director of the local Jewish Community Center.

Career Highlights:
A three year letterwinner, Guttman was one of Toledo's best players in the mid-1950s. After finishing 5-17 (4-10 in the Mid-America Conference) in 1955, and 9-13 (6-6 in conference) in 1956, the Rockets finished with a poor record of 5-19 (3-9 in conference),in Guttman's senior season of 1957. That year, Guttman was named second team All-Mid America Conference as he averaged 18.9 points per game (227 points in 12 conference games), seventh in the conference - he led the team in scoring over the entire season with a 17.7 points per game average.

Captain of the 1957 team, he had some great games during his career. As a junior in 1956, he scored 37 points (a then-record 17 field goals) against ninth-ranked Niagara University, and made a 40-foot shot to propel the Rockets to a two-point victory. It was considered one of the greatest upsets in school history. That same year, he also scored 33 points against Marshall. The following year, he attempted 28 field goals in a game against Marshall, making 15.
