Career Highlights:
Lifson had a terrific four-year career at the University of North Carolina. In 1951-52, as a freshman, Al led the Tar Heels in field goal percentage (.406), free throw percentage (.707), and scoring average (15.8). In 1952-53, he again led the team in free throw percentage (.704), and scoring average (14.7) as the Heels finished 17-10. The following season, UNC joined the newly formed ACC (Atlantic Coast Conference) and Lifson scored 14.6 points per game while leading the team again in free throw percentage (.763). The Tar Heels finished 11-10 (5-6 in conference).

In 1954-55, Lifson was co-captain of the Tar Heels and scored 14.6 points per game while enjoying a career-high .431 field goal percentage. That year, he helped develop a young Tar Heel player named Lennie Rosenbluth (a three-time All-America), and UNC finished 10-11 (8-6 in conference).
