Marvin Colen

Colen, a member of the Loyola University Athletics Hall of Fame, was named All-America in 1937. He also played six games in the NBL (National Basketball League) for two teams during the 1939-40 season.

Career Highlights:
Born in Chicago, Colen played guard at Roosevelt High School in the city before attending Loyola University (Chicago) under Hall of Fame coach Leonard Sachs. A three-year starter for the Ramblers, Colen and Loyola went 5-14 in 1934-35 and then 8-8 in 1935-36. As a senior in 1937, Colen was named Converse second team All-America while leading Loyola (considered one of the top teams in the country) to a terrific 16-3 record. He was only the second All-America in school history.

After graduating, Colen played for a short time in the NBL, the top professional league in the Midwest. In 1939-40, he played one game for the Chicago Bruins and then appeared in five games for the Sheboygan Redskins, scoring six points. Sheboygan finished the regular season with a record of 13-11 and tied for second place in the standings. In the playoffs, they advanced to the NBL finals, but lost to the Oshkosh (Wisconsin) All-Stars - Colen appeared in one playoff game but did not score. Besides the NBL, Colen also played in the BBYO (B'nai B'rith Youth Organization) League in Chicago and also played at Fort Custer in Michigan during World War II.
