Michael Cingiser

After an All-Ivy League career at Brown University in the early 1960s, Cingiser coached his alma mater to the school's only Ivy League title in 1986. He is the only three-time first team All-Ivy selection in school history.

Career Highlights:
One of the greatest basketball players in Brown University�s history, Cingiser was a top scorer in the Ivy League during his career in the early 1960s. A three-time All-Ivy League selection (first-team in 1960, 1961, and 1962), he led the Bears to a record of 13-12 (8-6 in conference) in 1960 while finishing third in the league in scoring. In 14 league games, Cingiser scored 265 points for a 18.9 average.

In 1961, he added All-American honorable mention honors and finished sixth in the league in scoring with 16.0 points per game (224 points in 14 games). The Bears, unfortunately, did not improve in the conference, and again finished with a 8-6 record (11-14 overall). That year, Cingiser played on the U.S. team at the Maccabiah Games along with fellow collegiate stars Larry Brown and Art Heyman. The U.S. team defeated Israel 83-68 in the final to capture the gold medal.

In his senior season (1962), Cingiser continued to be one of the Ivy League's top players and was again named All-America honorable mention while scoring 18.3 points per game (fifth in the conference with 264 points in 14 Ivy League games) as Brown finished 11-14 (6-8 in conference).

After his excellent college career, Cingiser was selected by the Boston Celtics in the ninth round (81st overall) in the NBA Draft, but did not play in the NBA. He later coached the Bears in the 1980s and led them to the school's first, and only, Ivy League title. Brown (16-10) earned an automatic bid to the NCAA tournament and a No. 15 seed in the East Region. In the first round, the Bears were overwhelmed by the Syracuse Orangemen, who beat them, 101-52. Despite the blowout loss, Cingiser and Brown had much to celebrate, since it was only the school's second-ever postseason appearance (the first visit to the postseason came in 1939 in the first-ever NCAA tournament when Brown lost to Villanova in the first round).
