William Lazar

Lazar was an excellent player at the University of Pennsylvania during the late 1920s and led the Quakers to two consecutive Ivy League titles.

Birth and Death Dates:
b. March 27, 1909 - d. April 1978

Career Highlights:

Lazar played for the University of Pennsylvania varsity basketball team in the late 1920s and was one of their top players during his junior and senior seasons, when the Quakers won back-to-back championships. Prior to this success, in his sophomore year (1927), Lazar appeared in only one conference game, and scored only a single point. Penn finished 5-5 and in third place in the Ivy League that season.

But in 1928, Lazar became a regular member of the Quaker squad as a starting guard. He played in all 10 conference games and scored 33 points (fourth on the team). Penn captured the conference title with a 7-3 record; it was their first Ivy League championship since 1921. With an overall record of 22-5, the Quakers were also considered one of the top teams in the country (there were no official polls until the late 1940s).

The following year, Lazar was named second team All-Ivy League (despite not finishing among the top 25 scorers in the conference) and he led the Quakers to another conference title with a record of 20-6 (8-2 in conference).
