Seeman, Mel

Melvin Seeman

A 6'5" forward and center, Seeman played basketball at New York University for three seasons in the early 1950s, and led the Violets to a postseason appearance his senior season (1952). After graduating, he played professionally in the final season of the American Basketball League.

Career Highlights:
Seeman was a graduate of Lincoln High School in New York City, where one of his teammates was future Duquesne basketball star Artie Goldberg. Goldberg and Seeman led their Lincoln High squad to the PSAL title game in 1948. Seeman then played three seasons for NYU (New York University) in the early 1950s.

In 1950, Seeman was NYU's starting center, teaming with senior forward Joel Kaufman and junior guard Abe Becker. NYU struggled during the year, however, and finished with a record of 8-11. After improving to 13-4 in 1951, the following year Seeman captained NYU to a 17-7 record and a berth in the 1952 NIT (National Invitational Tournament). In the first round, the Violets faced Dayton, and Seeman scored 10 points in NYU's 81-66 loss.

Following his graduation from NYU in 1952, Seeman played briefly in the American Basketball League in the ABL�s final year of existence. The league had been considered the top league in the East in the 1930s and early 1940s, but the founding of the Basketball Association of America, which became the NBA in 1949, soon caused the ABL to shut down. During the 1952-53 season, Seeman appeared in eight games for the Scranton Miners and averaged 8.8 points per game; the Miners finished 12-11, fourth in the league, and were eliminated from the playoffs in the semifinals.
