Theodore Elsberg

A graduate of Erasmus High School in Brooklyn (class of 1950), Elsberg played basketball at New York University in the early 1950s. He later became the president of the Council of Supervisors and Administrators of the public schools of New York City. Other Jewish Erasmus graduates who made their mark in the sports field, include football great Sid Luckman and Oakland Raiders owner Al Davis.

Career Highlights:
Elsberg was a solid center at NYU in the 1950s and helped lead the Violets to the postseason in 1952. That year, NYU finished the regular season with a record of 19-8, and the Violets were invited to the NIT (National Invitational Tournament). Elsberg scored 5 points in NYU's 81-66 first round loss to Dayton. The following year, the Violets were not as strong, and could only post a mark of 10-11. In 1954, Elsberg was team captain of the Violets, and led them to a record of 11-9.
