Sidney Rosenthal

Rosenthal played basketball at the University of Iowa in the mid-1930s and was one of the Hawkeyes’ top players for two seasons. He co-captained the squad as a senior in 1936.

Career Highlights:
Born in Chicago, Rosenthal attended Marshall High School and captained the basketball team to the City championship in 1931 with a 26-19 victory over Englewood -- Rosenthal scored eight points in the title game. After his high school career, Rosenthal played two seasons of varsity basketball as a forward at Iowa. In 1935, he finished third on the team in scoring with 110 points and the Hawkeyes finished sixth in the Western Conference (Big Ten) with a 6-6 record (10-9 overall). During the season, the Chicago Tribune called the 5'5" Rosenthal "the outstanding small man in Big Ten basketball this season."

The following year, Rosenthal returned to Iowa as a senior co-captain and performed even better, leading the team in scoring with 162 points (none of his teammates registered more than 76 total points). In conference play, Rosenthal was the tenth leading scorer among all Western Conference players with 101 points in 12 conference games. That year, Iowa finished 9-10 overall and in seventh place in the conference (5-7).
