Career Highlights:
Goldstein, a guard and forward, began his varsity career at NYU as a freshman in 1944 (during World War II, freshman were allowed to play varsity). Marty came off the bench during the season to join classmate Sid Tanenbaum. In the final game of the year, Goldstein scored three points in a 56-46 loss to rival CCNY (City College of New York). NYU finished the season 9-8.

The following season, Goldstein and Tanenbaum were joined on the Violets by freshmen Dolph Schayes and Don Forman. NYU finished the regular season with a 12-6 record and a trip to the NCAA tournament. In the first round, they defeated Tufts, 59-44, although Goldstein did not play in the game. In the next round, however, the Violets engineered one of the greatest comebacks in tournament history.

After their victory over Tufts, NYU played Ohio State in the NCAA semifinal (at that time, the tournament had only eight teams). The inexperienced Violet squad, led by their freshmen and sophomores, were losing to the Buckeyes by 10 points with only two minutes remaining. After missing three consecutive free throws, the Buckeyes found themselves tied with NYU at the end of regulation. In the first minute of the extra period, NYU scored three baskets (Goldstein assisted one of them) and eventually won the game, 70-65.

In the NCAA championship game, NYU faced Oklahoma A&M; and their seven-foot All-America center, Bob Kurland. NYU could not guard against Kurland's height; and while they held leads during the game, they eventually lost the contest, 49-45. Goldstein, who scored two points in the win over Ohio State, also registered two points in the final.

In 1946, Goldstein's junior season, he became a sporadic starter as both a guard and forward. That year, the Violets were possibly the best team in the country during the regular season. They won 18 of their first 19 games of the year and rolled over most of their opponents. They were the consensus No. 1 ranked team in the country as they headed into their annual season finale against CCNY. With 13 consecutive victories, NYU was a heavy favorite, but they were upset by CCNY's Beavers, 49-44. Goldstein was held scorelesss in that game, but finished with 115 points during the regular season.

NYU returned to the NCAA tournament that year and was considered one of the favorites. In the first round, they played North Carolina. Goldstein, starting at forward, did not score in the game, and NYU fell to the Tar Heels, 57-49. However, in the East Region consolation game, the Violets defeated Harvard, 67-61.

As a senior in 1947, Goldstein played mostly forward, although NYU struggled to achieve a 12-9 regular season record. They lost in the season finale to CCNY, 91-60, in one of the worst losses in school history.
