Yavits, Izzy "Doe"

Isadore Yavits

Before becoming a famous basketball coach and official, Yavits played at Union College in the late 1910s. A teacher and coach (in basketball, soccer, and track and field) for over 30 years at Ithaca College, he is a member of the Ithaca College Athletic Hall of Fame.

b. March 29, 1893 - d. July 1983

Career Highlights:
A member of the Basketball Officials' Hall of Fame, Yavits played at Union College and was cited his freshman year by the New York Times for his brilliance in outplaying Army's All-America Elmer Oliphant. He captained Union College in 1918 and 1919 to records of 15-1, 8-3 respectively.

Yavits later turned to coaching and was head basketball coach at Ithaca College from 1930-1945. During his tenure, he had a record of 138-78 (.639 winning percentage). A professor at Ithaca, Yavits also coached the soccer team from 1932-1962 and compiled a record of 89-102-18. The soccer field at Ithaca is called Yavits Field.
