Montgomery Herscovitz

A Canadian welterweight in 1920, Herscovitch won the bronze medal as a middleweight at the 1920 Olympics after he volunteered to step up to the middleweight class for the Olympics so a teammate could have a better chance of winning in the lighter division.

Career Highlights:
An excellent all-around athlete, Herscovitch was a member of Montreal Amateur Athletic Association's championship soccer team in 1920, the same year he was Canada's amateur middleweight champion. As a professional, Herscovitch was knocked out by world welterweight champion Mickey Walker in the sixth-round of their non-title bout in December 1923 -- the fight took place in Toronto. A member of the Canadian Amateur Athletic Hall of Fame, Herscovitch was inducted was "for athletic achievement and as an example of sportsmanship."
