A welterweight, Hirst had his first big fight against Jack Britton in Philadelphia; the March 17, 1909 bout went the full six-rounds and was a no decision. Five years later, the two boxers fought again in Philadelphia on March 7, 1914 and again the fight was a no decision (Britton won the world title the following year). Also during his career, Hirst fought Packey McFarland and Mike Gibbons (both Hall of Famers who never won titles) to six-round no decisions in Philadelphia.
