A powerful lighweight in the late 1910s and 1920s, 14 of Mendelsohn's 18 victories were knockouts. During his career, he fought some of the best boxers in his division, including Rocky Kansas, Joe Dundee, Lew Tendler, and the great Benny Leonard.

Mendelsohn began his professional career in 1916 and had his first big fight when he faced Pinky Mitchell two years later; the bout ended in a no decision. Although never given a title shot, he fought the top lightweights in the mid-1920s, and registered no decision bouts with future champ Rocky Kansas in 1921 and 1923, contender Lew Tendler in 1922, and champion Benny Leonard in 1923. One of the highlights of Mendelsohn's career came in 1923, when he knocked out Eddie Mohme in the 9th round of their bout In 1927, the final year of his career, Mendelsohn fought Joe Dundee and was knocked out in the fourth-round (Dundee would win the world welterweight title in his next fight).
