The Danish amateur heavyweight champion in 1928, Michaelsen competed in the Olympic Games that year. He received a first-round bye and then defeated a French fighter named Garbedois in the second-round. Upon reaching the semifinals, Michaelsen faced Arturo Rodrigues Jurado of Argentina and lost a decision. He then fought in the third-place bout against a Norgwegian and captured the bronze medal when his opponent retired.
