Saunders, Jack

The British Army's boxing champion in the mid-1900s, Saunders was the first English Jew to die in World War I. On August 23, 1914, just eight days after being deployed to France, Saunders and the Northumberland Fusiliers (one of England's most famous fighting units -- their history dates back to the 1670s) engaged German troops at the Battle of Mons, England's first major action. Saunders was killed during the battle.
