Seven months after the rematch, Strauss then fought the legendary Joe Gans and was knocked out in the fifth round. Strauss fought O'Brien a third time in 1897 and again lost a six-round decision. On January 8, 1900, Isadore battled Matty Matthews (who would win the welterweight title later that year) and was knocked out in the 12th-round; they had a rematch in 1903 and Strauss was knocked out again, this time in the second-round.
