Career Highlights:
Wagner began his professional career as a featherweight in 1920 and fought future world welterweight champion Joe Dundee in January 1921; the bout ended in an eight-round draw. The following year, he fought Louis "Kid" Kaplan twice in the span of a month; the two fighters split decisions. In 1923, Wagner defeated Red Cap Wilson in March and then had no decision bouts with Hall of Famers Johnny Dundee and Sammy Mandell.

Wagner continued to fight the best boxers as he moved up to lightweight. In 1924, he split decisions with contender Sid Terris and fought future champ Mandell in another no decision bout. The following year, the lightweight title was vacated when champion Benny Leonard retired. In February 1925, a month after Leonard's retirement, Wagner fought Jimmy Goodrich as part of an elimination tournament to determine the next champion. He lost a 12-round decision to Goodrich, who went on to win the tournament and the title in July.

In March 1926, Wagner fought Louis "Kid" Kaplan for a third time, and Kaplan was world featherweight champion by then. Although it was a non-title bout, the "rubber" match was hard-fought and ended in a 10-round draw. Over the next few years, Wagner continued to fight often and had rematches with Goodrich in 1927 and Mandell in 1928, but lost both bouts in 10-round decisions. In 1930, he was knocked out in the third-round by Al Singer only four months before Singer became world champion. Wagner retired that year with a good record, but never a title shot.
