Kessler began his professional career in the mid-1940s and defeated Rudy Campo in March 1946, but lost to Tony Pellone five months later. That year, he also knocked out Cleo Shans and Pat Scanlon. In 1948, Kessler fought former world junior-welterweight champion Tippy Larkin twice, but lost both decisions. During his career, Kessler defeated Bobby Ruffin but lost decisions to middleweight Tony Janiro, and welterweight contenders Charley Fusari and Billy Graham.
